As defined by the American Academy of Psychiatry and Law, Forensic Psychiatry is a medical subspecialty that includes research and clinical practice in the many areas in which psychiatry is applied to legal issues. As a forensic psychiatrist, Dr. Walker works within many areas in which the mental health and legal system overlap. After practicing general psychiatry for two yeas in the USAF, Dr. Walker completed a forensic psychiatry fellowship at the University of South Carolina during the 1997-1998 academic year. Prior to the completion of his fellowship, the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology allowed Dr. Walker to sit for board certification in the subspecialty of forensic psychiatry. From 1998 to 2003, Dr. Walker led the rebuilding of the forensic psychiatry department at the Air Force.s largest medical center (Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland AFB, San Antonio, TX) in collaboration with the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. His leadership and teaching skills were acknowledged twice when he received the Golden Apple Teacher Award from the psychiatry and medical students in the combined civilan/military program at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center. Upon completion of his military obligation, Dr. Walker worked as the forensic clinical director of Georgia.s only maximum-security forensic hospital leading the treatment providing recommendations to the courts regarding the most dangerous mentally ill clients in Georgia. In his private forensic practice, Dr. Walker has evaluated individuals for fitness for duty, disability secondary to psychiatric diagnoses, competence to stand trial, criminal responsibility, mitigation in capital cases, and in many national and international high profile cases (confidentiality clauses prevent disclosure here).
